A Hairy Fairytale

The Stoke by Nayland Hotel was transformed into A Hairy Fairytale on Monday 26th October as nearly 50 apprentices demonstrated their creativity and talent at the EASI Hairdressing Academy’s hairdressing competition.

Owned by Julie Rawson, nominee for Business Woman of the Year at this year’s Colchester District Business Awards, EASI Hairdressing Academy operates in partnership with over 100 salons in Essex, Suffolk and London providing high quality training to students in the hairdressing and barbering industry.

The competition is an opportunity for our future budding stylists to display what they have learnt whilst adding individual flair. Compared by BBC Radio’s Sadie Nine, salon juniors competed in five fairytale themed categories to design hairstyles that were suggestive of their particular category, which ranged from Into the Dark Woods through to the Ultimate Battle and Happily Ever After. Judging was based not only on the hairstyle but also the make up and costume where individual’s creativity knew no bounds; with a mask and veil made out of hair, hand made ball gowns including one made out of newspapers and even a golden Lothario!

The last category of the evening was the Salon Team Event; Happily Ever After. In this section the artistic team from each salon worked together with their junior to develop a captivating look for their model, the junior then finished the design on the competition floor.

The PLA (programme led apprenticeship) group from EASI’s Braintree Centre won the runner’s up prize in the salon team event, Happily Ever After. PLA Students are talented apprentices who attend the academy on a full time basis whilst they look for an employed salon placement. Judges Edward Hemmings of Alan d and Stacey Broughton from myhairdressers.com, both well respected industry experts, were very impressed with the students; Edward “thought the standard of work was brilliant” and added that one winner outstripped work he had seen at Salon International just one week earlier. Stacey remarked that “it was rewarding to see how enthusiastic everyone was to be there and take part; the energy the competitors put in was so inspiring; it was great to see people’s imagination running off into different areas: very inventive”.

Winners and Runners-up came from salons across Essex with The Hair Factory in Colchester boasting a winner and runner-up and Silhouette du Barry in Chelmsford triumphant with two winners including the Salon Team Event. Other winners came from The Original Cut; Witham, Hidden; Frinton on Sea, Hair Innovations; Holland on Sea, Talking Heads; Braintree and Elite Hair Designs in Sible Hedingham. More than 150 guests supported the students, who were all presented with a DVD from myhairdressers.com and a Hair Emergency Kit from Milkshake; donated by Innovation Hair Supplies who also provided all of the runner-up prizes and first prize for the Happily Ever After category. All winners were presented with a trophy and certificate, with other winner prizes generously donated by Goldwell and BaBylis.
